There was no immediate acknowledgment by Syria's state-run media of the strikes hitting Deir Ez-Zor. The United States hit operational and weapons storage facilities at two locations in Syria and one in Iraq in June last year. This is not the first time US warplanes have struck Iran-backed forces in Iraq and Syria. "The president gave the direction for these strikes," said spokesman Army Colonel Joe Buccino. The military's Central Command said in a statement that such strikes were aimed at protecting US forces from attack by Iran-backed groups. It said the four heads of state discussed during their phone conversation, "ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme, the need to strengthen support for partners in the Middle East region and joint efforts to deter and constrain Iran’s destabilising regional activities". The leaders of the United States, Britain, France and Germany discussed efforts to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the White House said on Sunday. The strikes came even as the United States aimed to respond to a draft agreement proposed by the European Union that would bring back the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran that former President Donald Trump abandoned and current President Joe Biden has sought to revive.

The US military said early Wednesday it carried out air strikes in eastern Syria which targeted areas used by militias backed by Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
